As a child, I loved the idea of being a teacher and played that role so much that I taught one of my sisters how to read and write before she started school. To this day, I still love teaching and learning.

 

I was encouraged to focus on school and sports and that ended up being one of the few good things in my life as I started to excel in school especially when it came to mathematics. It seemed to me that it was obvious that I would become a secondary math teacher.

I graduated and taught grades 5 through 12 in a variety of subject areas. However, after 5 years, I chose to retire from teaching. I did so because I tended to be more introverted, and it took too much energy to be “on stage” every day all day long. I was also feeling somewhat bored as the subject matter didn’t really change and I wasn’t learning a lot of new things. I was also not feeling fulfilled as it became obvious that my efforts were seemingly unrelated to how successful the students were.

 

While in the process of leaving teaching, I thought about what I would like to do vocationally. I recalled what I experienced when I took my very first computer class in the last year of university. The programming section was very easy for me to learn because it felt like I was doing math. It was so enjoyable that I considered switching to Computer Science right there and then but didn’t because, at that time, I hadn't yet attained my teaching degree.

 

I did some research into careers involving computer programming and thought that it was a great fit for me. I enrolled in an accelerated program and loved it so much that I ended up receiving a diploma in Computer Programming & System Analysis at the top of my class! I was offered a position with a consulting company only one month into the 3-month internship and I was thriving. I felt glad that I was not on stage all day every day but was still able to do some teaching tasks like planning and facilitating workshops or training. I was also never bored as there were always things to learn and figure out. I felt more fulfilled due to the noticeable impact that I was making, and I was able to tap into my creative side.

 

Things were going well until a failed relationship unsettled my managed sense of self and I found myself using a lot of energy to find my footing. After several years of trying to overcome the depression I was experiencing, while employed in a full-time demanding position, I stopped running and started a healing journey.  I rested, received professional help, worked with life coaches, and read and listened to everything and anything that I thought would help me heal.

 

In the last year, my mindset and energy levels have elevated substantially. I wanted to get back to work and confirmed that I am still most suited to helping businesses with the use of Information Technology. I felt that I needed to get more education about how to do a proper analysis of a business so that solutions that are developed accurately meet the needs of the enterprise. With that in mind, I selected a Business Analysis program. I did well and learned so much, but I realized that my character and abilities are not suited to a limited view of a workday. I need more flexibility and the thought of starting my own business had been in the back of my mind for quite a long time. After consulting my mentors, I decided to go for it, and I’ve never been more excited to help small organizations meet their personal and professional goals!
